Harness the power of creativity to celebrate your community and change the world with Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids.

Do you think, “I’m just a kid. What can I do to make a difference?” Be an anti-racist artist! Have fun with 38 creative projects that empower you to use your art, actions, and words to create meaningful change.

Start your anti-racist art-making journey by defining ideas like race, racism, and anti-racism. Dive into six sections, beginning with self-reflection before seeking justice and taking action! Each section’s theme includes an array of activity choices, including:

  • Identity – Who you are and what makes you unique.
    • Explore your identity and create a symbol that represents you.
  • Culture – Your way of life and honoring what others value about theirs.
    • Make a textile design inspired by your home and culture.
  • Community – Connecting to people and places.
    • Challenge your implicit biases and discover how to draw diverse people.
  • Empathy – Understanding others and having compassion.
    • Learn the meaning of equity by solving real-world math problems with art.
  • Justice – Making a society that is fair for all.
    • Create a miniature billboard that comments on a social issue.
  • Activism – Creating change and transforming our communities.
    • Mail a postcard to a politician that informs them of what you would like to see change.

Other activities include designing a community mural and organizing people to make a positive change. As you work through the pages and explore the many parts of being an anti-racist artist, you will learn various art-making skills and engage with different materials such as paintclaytextiles, and recycled materials. At the back, a helpful glossary defines terms that come up in anti-racist discussions, from “activism” to “white supremacy.”

This book is just a starting point, and the possibilities are endless. There is no limit to your imagination and your impact!

Contributors include: Abigail Birhanu, Khadesia Latimer, Paula Liz, Lori Santos, Tamara Slade and Anjali Wells.

As an elementary gifted teacher, I am constantly on the lookout for resources that not only stimulate the creative minds of my students but also instill in them a sense of social responsibility. "Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids" has proven to be a gem in this regard, providing a rich tapestry of colorful, engaging activities that seamlessly weave together art education and the crucial themes of anti-racism.

The book's strength lies in its ability to convey complex topics in a manner accessible to all teachers. Each activity is accompanied by easy-to-follow, step-by-step directions adorned with vibrant images, making it visually appealing and easy to navigate. The inventive activities allow students to explore their own identities while appreciating the diversity around them.

Each chapter focuses on an overarching theme of anti-racism, including identity, culture, community, empathy, justice, and activism. This structure not only serves as a comprehensive guide for educators but also facilitates a seamless integration of these important themes into the classroom setting. The introductory overview of each theme provides educators with a solid foundation, equipping them to navigate discussions with students of varying ages.

What sets this book apart is its commitment to fostering perspective, community, and self-reflection. The activities are opportunities for students to engage in meaningful dialogue about social issues. The inclusion of a "why this matters" section for each activity reinforces the purpose behind each creative endeavor and ensures that the overarching themes remain at the forefront of the students' minds.

The book's initial sections gently guide educators through explanations of race and anti-racism, offering valuable insights for those navigating these conversations in the classroom. Additionally, the guidance on how to use the book effectively in an educational setting is a welcome feature, making it accessible for teachers of various backgrounds and experiences.

As an elementary gifted teacher, I appreciate the adaptability of these activities. The book not only serves as an effective guide for teaching art techniques but also celebrates self and community. It encourages students to recognize their gifts and talents as tools for positive change, fostering a sense of responsibility to others.

"Anti-Racist Art Activities for Kids" has proven to be a valuable resource that transcends traditional art education. It empowers young minds to explore their creativity while fostering a deep understanding of anti-racist principles. This book is not just a guide; it is a celebration of diversity, self-expression, and our shared responsibility to create a more inclusive world. Highly recommended for educators seeking to inspire both artistic expression and social consciousness in their students.

Not only is this a beautifully designed book, but it also has fantastic lessons on big abstract concepts such as identity, community, culture, and justice. These are all important topics but quite difficult to unpack with young kids. This book helps parents and educators discuss these complex themes in a way that young minds can understand. Did I mention it's also quite beautiful? You can tell it was designed by some incredible artists!
