This book offers a survey of the historical and theoretical development of the filial therapy approach and presents an overview of filial therapy training and then filial therapy processes. The book also includes a transcript of an actual session, answers to common questions raised by parents, children, and therapists, as well as additional resources and research summaries. Additional chapters address filial therapy with special populations, filial therapy in special settings, and perhaps the most useful resource for busy therapists and parents, a chapter covers variations of the 10 session model, to allow for work with individual parents, training via telephone, and time-intensive or time-extended schedules.

I enjoy this book, particularly with the questions it ask around each diagnosis and the worksheets working with them. However, I find it can be a little wordy on some pages with kids having to write multiple sentences. I appreciate using the questions with parents and having them ask the kids those questions. There are other activities in each one that I enjoy, particularly the animal walks or mindfulness activities.

I would have given this 5 stars for the content and quality, but removed a star because of the binding. This is a nice paperback edition. I was looking for the original yellow coil binding with tabbed dividers. This is a manual, not a textbook. It needs to be coil bound for working use. Please indicate when this edition is available.

Easy to read and practical guide to filial therapy. Counselors would benefit from having this book as one of their bookshelf references.

Overall, I was very impressed with this Filial Play Therapy treatment model. Each session is described in detail with examples of helpful things to say/not to say when instructing parents in how to interact with their children during special play times. The only reason I gave it a 4 star was because I found it distracting that there was a lot of jumping around in the manual in order to get all of the information for a particular session. Meaning, each sessions materials had different parts that were located in different sections (i.e. parent notebook, therapist notebook, appendices, CD, etc.) Other than that, I am sure I will refer to this book quite frequently throughout my practice.

I really like this model of therapy for parents with young children. It provides support for parents, as well as special playtime for children. It includes a CD-Rom with all the handouts, and manuals for parents and therapists. My only complaint is that it is not completely compatible with a Mac. You can download the documents on the CD, but the program with the table of contents doesn't run. Also, including some sample play therapy videos with the manual would make it more complete. Overall, I plan to use this manual with parents, and find it a good addition to my collection.

This manual has absolutely everything you need to teach CPRT to parents (with the exception I guess of the actual toys). The CD provided makes it so simple--just pop it in your computer and print off what you need. Some of the files are in Word so you can modify them to fit your specific needs. As a beginning counselor, new to leading psycho/educational groups, this manual was a life saver! If you work with parents and want to help them strengthen their relationships with their children, and you understand and believe in Child Centered theory, I highly recommend this program.

Dr. Landreth and Ms. Bratton have compiled decades of research, experience and practice into an outstanding book that enables any therapist (willing to devote the time necessary to learn and practice these practical skills) to teach parents to do play therapy with their own children. CPRT can help parents to step back and relax and enjoy their children, all the while encouraging their children towards positive self-esteem, decision-making, self control, boundaries, and so much more; not to mention a closer relationship between parent and child. Thank you, Dr. Landreth & Sue Bratton for enhancing what I do in my counseling! I see myself being available to women's shelters, as a resource to daycares and elementary school counselors, and churches. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
