A Therapist’s Guide to Child Development gives therapists and counselors the basics they need to understand their clients in the context of development and to explain development to parents. The chapters take the reader through the various physical, social, and identity developments occurring at each age, explaining how each stage of development is closely linked to mental health and how that is revealed in therapy. This ideal guide for students, as well as early and experienced professionals, will also give readers the tools to communicate successfully with the child’s guardians or teachers, including easy-to-read handouts that detail what kind of behaviors are not cause for concern and which behaviors mean it’s time to seek help. As an aid to practitioners, this book matches developmental ages with appropriate, evidence-based mental health interventions.

I wish this book had existed when I was a young parent! I think it would have helped me understand and anticipate issues as I raised my children. As a counselor, I use this book whenever I start working with a new client. It helps refresh my awareness of typical development at each age. The book provides descriptions of physical, emotional, and social development at each age as well as fears, challenges and causes for concern. And there are summary pages in the back that can be used as a quick reference to share with parents.

This book is an excellent resource for a therapist that works with children and their parents. I use it in the beginning of sessions for most of my clients to educate and offer perspective. It appears that some customers are receiving copyrighted manuals and that’s unfortunate and I wish amazon was better about making sure that doesn’t happen. The copy I received is original and very highly recommended.
